My cat wants to always be outside?

I live out in the country so it isn't that I am worried about him getting ran over. He's been neutered and I thought that neutered cats liked to stay in the house. The only time he comes in is to eat or when it's cold or rainy. Sometimes he stays gone for two days and if I try to keep him in he cries wanting back out. Why does he do this?
