How was euthenasia performed centuries ago?

Now, I'm not talking about falling on swords & so forth,so please no answers of that nature. But many centuries ago when medicines were concocted by the local witch or hebalist, how did they perform euthenasia, on patients beyond any known cure? ... I used to know, but I have forgotten with age.
