So am I suppose to pay for someone's book if it got damaged while it was in my bag because of the rain?

The book was brand new she told me that I'm supposed to pay for the book bc it was my responsibility. and that she was planning to sell it as new and now she cant. I told her I won't pay for it because it was rainy is not my fault .....
