Can someone take to you to court because you don't want to pay for the damage (book)?

I don't want to pay because it wasn't my fault It was rainy (I had an open bag). She said it was my responsability and also she want to sue me for verbal abusing her. ( I told her that she need to learn some english, I finished college first than her and I make more money.) She told me to give it back to her in same new condition but it wasn't my fault that it got wet. State: NY .... And the books is international ca not be sell in USa
