Why are banks changing from visa to mastercard?

No one asks questions and its pissing me off because i am interested to know why myself (a sovereign bank customer) and other friends (chase, bank of america, etc.) all had to get new debit cards because they no longer support visa. Did something happen with Visa Inc or anything like that or it just competition that changed the game?
